Deciding On A Quartz Countertop

Renovating a home takes dollars, time, and inordinate patience; but most of all it takes decision-making that should ultimately culminate in a fantastic result. Finding those materials that are both affordable and visually appealing is the biggest challenge for all home renovators.

There are many different styles of countertop materials available on the market today; and while the most popular are typically ceramic tile, granite, and laminate, there is another style of countertop that can effectively achieve all that you want from a new kitchen design. A quartz countertop brings a low-maintenance, durable, and beautiful alternative to all who are looking for a stunning new countertop design.

Quartz is a material that is found in great abundance within the earth; in fact, it is only second to water as the most common mineral-based form on the entire planet. Found to be effective and durable in a number of common home applications, quartz is now widely used in this capacity.

The quartz countertop is typically comprised of 100% quartz; the result is a countertop that holds up incredibly well under any kitchen conditions. Such countertops are heat resistant and hold up extremely well against scratches, stains, and impact. They are relatively low maintenance and provide an excellent workspace for cooks.

However, it is important to be on the lookout for those countertops that claim to be fully quartz comprised but that actually contain other material as well. Any additional material used in the making of the countertop can actually compromise the integrity of the quartz, rendering the countertops porous and therefore highly vulnerable to stains and scratches.

The quartz countertop is made from raw quartz crystals that are selected for their size and strength and then ground together. Once the quartz crystals are sufficiently ground, they are mixed with bonding agents before being heated and compacted to form an impenetrable surface.

The colors that we are attracted to when we pick our countertop are actually added within this process of grounding the quartz crystals. Color pigments are added to the mixture of bonding agents and ground quartz to form a beautiful palette that will suit any kitchen design.

Ultimately, the quartz countertop is a solid piece of stone that weighs quite a bit more than granite simply because it was manufactured to be particularly dense. While this is an advantageous characteristic once they are installed, the quartz countertop can be difficult to install for exactly this reason.

A do-it-yourselfer – no matter how motivated – should never attempt to install a quartz countertop unless they have specific experience with handling this particular material. Because this countertop is so strong it is also very heavy and can be dropped and broken if not handled correctly. It is best to leave such an installation to a professional contractor who has experience with quartz.

You can find a quartz countertop at any location where you would purchase a kitchen countertop – from a kitchen design store to a large home improvement retailer. Just be sure to do your homework prior to shopping so that you know how to recognize the real countertops when you see them.

Cost-Effective Countertop Materials

Chris Fuller is a construction specialist and the owner of Kitchen Bath & Glass Center in Florida. His company has been in business since 1987, servicing both residential and commercial customers throughout the local area. Here, Fuller gives his opinion on cost-effective countertop materials.

Expensive countertop materials like granite and quartz might get the bulk of the attention in home design books and magazine spreads, but they are far from the only options available for homeowners embarking on a kitchen renovation. In fact, the number of lower-cost alternative countertop materials is continuing to expand.

Different Brands

Among the best low-cost countertop alternatives is Formica, which gives homeowners a nice, clean look without costing a lot. Formica is such as well-known brand that many people confuse it with laminate—which is the name for the generic countertop material that Formica has become famous for using.

Despite Formica’s relatively low cost, other brands offer laminate-style countertops even cheaper. And just because you want to use laminate as the countertop material in a remodel job doesn’t mean you are forced to use the Formica brand. Several other brands such as Wilsonart, for example, offer laminate surface countertops at varying prices. It would definitely be worthwhile to do a little price comparison before deciding on a specific laminate countertop material or brand for your kitchen remodel, since prices can fluctuate depending on the seller.

More Savings

As opposed to granite or quartz, laminate is almost always the most cost-effective countertop material for people looking to remodel their countertops on a budget. And especially for our clients interested in kitchen remodeling in Melbourne, FL, staying on budget is important. If you choose to put in a Formica countertop rather than a granite or quartz, then overall you would probably save around 0 or 0, or maybe even 0, on a normal bathroom countertop vanity. And that savings could end up being even more for kitchen surfaces, which tend to be larger.

Other brands that offer laminate countertops, such as Wilsonart, usually charge around to per foot. Compared to granite countertops, which run anywhere from to , laminate countertops are a much cheaper option. When you look at the actual numbers, you can really see how much you’d be saving. Those price differences show you the general difference in how much you can save by going with a less expensive laminate material when remodeling a kitchen rather than a pricier material like granite, marble, or quartz.

Shorter Lifespan

On the other hand, a laminate countertop might not last quite as long as some of the more costly options like granite and quartz. In general, most of these laminate surfaces have about a 10- to 12-year lifespan. Besides the shorter lifespan, however, there are few downsides to choosing a laminate countertop. While Formica might not look as high end as granite or quartz, it remains a great deal for the price.

Whatever material you end up choosing, I recommend doing your homework and looking at what prices are being offered by various retail outlets. At Kitchen Bath & Glass Center, we are able to offer our clients who are interested in kitchen remodeling in Melbourne, FL, great prices due in part to the fact that we know the area so well, and have worked in the industry for such as long time. So when it comes to handling an expensive project like a kitchen renovation, it’s worthwhile to work with experienced professionals.

A Note on Kitchen Countertop Pricing

When you’re getting ready to shop for your kitchen counter tops be aware that some materials such as granite and quartz and other natural and engineered stone materials are priced per square foot and other materials such as laminate are priced per linear foot.

Remember this difference when you shop. Since most countertops are about 2 feet deep, simply multiply the square foot price by 2 to estimate the cost per linear foot.

Typical kitchen counter tops are anywhere between 28 and 30 linear feet. Most likely they will be either a U-shape or L-shape layout. Laminate counters are sold by the linear foot, but other materials such as solid surfacing, natural stone, and engineered stone are sold by the square foot.

It’s all in the options

There is a vast difference in price between a basic, post-formed laminate countertop, a laminate countertop with a premium edge, and top-end options like solid surfacing and stone.

For a typical 30-foot linear countertop, a post-form laminate top might cost as little as 0. For a premium laminate with a beveled edge, the price could go up to ,000.

For solid surfacing, natural stone or engineered stone, which would be priced between and 0 per square foot, you’re looking at ,800 to ,000. Prices listed are guidelines only so always verify prices for the materials you select with your retailer or installer.

With laminates much of the cost of a is the labor: fabrication and installation. With laminate countertops, labor costs are separate from materials costs. That’s why it’s important to work with a fabricator and installer you feel good about, who has a good business reputation, and whose bid is realistic.

This isn’t the case for pricing natural stone, engineered stone and solid surfacing materials. The square foot costs for natural stone, quartz countertops and solid surfacing countertop material include the fabrication and the installation, so you have less opportunity to price shop or compare installation bids from separate contractors or fabricators.

When estimating the entire remodeling costs be sure to include all the components involved with the countertop installation. A total countertop job takes into account the material itself, profiling the edge, cutting and drilling for sinks and faucets, the installation itself, and often, removing the old top.

When calculating your remodeling costs you need to compare the total installed costs when shopping for new countertops to avoid any unpleasant surprises in your remodeling costs and keep from going over budget.

Another option is a countertop that is made of granite tiles. Weighing The Granite Countertops Pros And Cons

At this time there are a lot of pros and cons to think about prior to choosing granite countertops.

One of granite countertops greatest pros is actually how tough of a counter top it really is. A granite counter top can be the longest enduring element of your current house. Metamorphic stone just like granite will certainly endure the test of time as well as be there in tact as your house begins to crumbling down around it. The only thing in which you’ll be required to do is actually a bit of upkeep in order to maintain the surface area of your counter bright and brand new.

And that points us right into one of the biggest negatives of granite counters. The upkeep of granite countertops can easily seem to be difficult to numerous folks. The annual maintenance which is required is certainly not tough but a lot of folks neglect to do it and doing so could make you susceptible to a full host of issues.

What is required of granite countertops owners is a yearly sealing of the counters together with an excellent quality sealant. The sealant fills up the microscopic holes of the counter as well as makes the surface area impermeable to staining and microbes. Skip this particular maintenance and you’ll stain your counter tops much more quickly as well as permit bacteria a new location to take root and prosper.

Returning to the advantages of the granite countertops pros and cons. That genuinely is about it for the negatives.

Another benefit derived from granite’s resilience is its huge tolerance regarding warmth. A person could take a sizzling pot of boiling water off of the stove and place it on the counter top. Seems basic enough and you might ask yourself the reason why a person may even want to do that. Now I admit that it’s not really too frequently that you are going to position a sizzling pot of cooking water on your counter top. However how about a casserole? Do you take pots and pans just like this from the stove and locate them onto a pot holder. Well now you may throw out the place holder and just set the piping hot bowl right on top of the granite counter.

An additional thing which I really like about granite countertops and I bet it is the reason why you like them too is their pure attractiveness. Many folks, me personally as well, feel that you can’t obtain a more stunning counter for your money. Nothing at all matches up to the beauty as well as classic styling of granite. Right now there are an infinite variety of colors as well as patterns to pick from and no two organic stone countertops are precisely alike. You’ll have your own bit of art made by mother nature that is a new piece of art every time.

Stainless Steel Kitchen Countertops video and photo

From www.toolocity.com, this is part of a 28 minute video on how to fabricate granite undermount kitchen sink for Do-It-Yourselfers. The project was to replace a top mount granite kitchen sink with an undermount granite kitchen sink. We took a piece of matching “pre-fabbed” granite slab (by pre-fabbed we mean the edge has been pre-fabricated), cut the sink hole and polished the entire sink edges. In the full 28 minute video, Buren Smith, our 25-year veteran stone fabricator, demonstrates the following skills and techniques: 1. Templating; 2. Using variable speed angle grinder; 3. Straight cutting with grinder and turbo blade; 4. Curved cutting with contour blade; 5. Smoothing curve cuts with drum wheel; 6. Polishing undermount sink with dry polishing pads; 7. Drill a faucet hole with Sure-Guide and dry core bit. This video demonstrates fabrication of a rectangular undermount sink. These skills and tools can also be applied to fabricating oval undermount sinks and vessel bowls.
